Common SEO Mistakes

Part Two: Designing Content - Content is the most important part of your web site. Let me say that again. Content is the most important part of your web site. You can get people to come to your web site without good content, but you will not get them to come back without it. Content is THE determining factor on conversions, and a critical factor in your search engine rankings.

  • Planning - Too often people come to me wanting a web site, but have no idea what should be on it. When these people come by I walk them through the development process, and make sure it's done right. Many times though I have seen people get exactly what they ask for. A plain, non-focused, non-converting, static and boring web site. The layout may be pretty, but it just doesn't say very much. I usually click away when I see something like this just as you do. The first step to any web site should be a few serious hours of determining not only what you want to say, but how you want to say it. With that second part I'm talking about the flow of the web site. I like to design web sites in tiers like a pyramid. The idea is that there are lots of areas for people to explore, but they are always driven to a point. That point is where you make a call to action and get their contact information. Spending a few hours to figure out what you want to say, and how to make your web site flow will pay off ten fold in the end.
  • Keywords - Many times people have a good idea of keywords that they want to optimize their web site for. Quite often though, there are much better and much more keywords than the person originally thought of. The days of stuffing the same word as many times as possible in to a page are dead. Today we need to write naturally and build relevance. One way to do this is to take your initial list of keywords and research them. Then choose all of the keywords that are relevant to your web site and group them. For this I use Wordze which has the best feature set of any keyword tool and low cost trial memberships. The idea is to group your keywords in to three groups. The first group is the must haves. These aren't the keywords that you WANT to be on top for, these are what you NEED to be on top for. When keywords are very popular it might take a LOT of resources to be on top. Quite often you'll get more traffic for being in the top ten of a less popular keyword than third or fourth page of a very popular one. If you think the keyword is too tough, put it in the second group. You can include these on your site and see how you rank. As your site grows you can start to target these keywords. The third group is relevant keywords. These are words related to your subject, but not in your core. These keywords are nice to have when you need to expand your content, but you've exhausted your main subject. The nice thing is sometimes these secondary keywords become popular and can become the focus of your site.
