SEO is simply putting things in the right places so that search engines know what your site is about. It involves knowing what to do and what not to do for success. Here we cover some of the basics of what to do and provide links to our best resources.
Every web page should have three things to be ready for search engines. The title is hidden inside the web page code and displayed in two important places. The first place is the top of the web page window, and the second is the search engine results. Your title is the first thing (and sometimes the only thing) someone reads when they see your sire listed in search engines. Make sure that each page has a unique title, and that the title displays the keywords you ant to rank for in the beginning. Is should be brief, to the point, and about 65 characters long.
Another piece of hidden code is the description. Some search engines display this below the title, and all major search engines take it's text in to consideration. Like the title it should be unique to the page (not the same for every page) and consist of two or three short sentences. I generally recommend about 150 characters.
Headings are the large bold text on the page. Search engines pay special attention to these. Try to make sure that they contain a few keywords describing the text below them. It is important that they are relative to the text below, so make them sort of a very simple summary.
Links are also critical inside and out of your site. Make sure that every page you want to get ranked in search engines is linked from most of your other pages. This is easily done by having your main menu link to the page. You can also use links in your text to give additional keyword weight to your pages. Sites with lots if internal links make it easy for people to navigate and search engines to know what pages are about. You need more than internal links. I suggest building at least two or three external links to each of your web pages (not just your home page) that contains the keywords that you want that page to rank for. Keep in mind that the name of the web page (notice this name of this page is search engine optimization) can help you get those links easily. Write an article and publish it to an article directory (search for "free article submission"). Normally you can't use HTML in your links, but you can put the url in. If you have a few keywords in the URL they become keywords for the link. Doing this process of contributing quality content and building a few links to every page will dramatically help your search engine results.
