SEO Tip: Easy Link Building For Longevity

Marketing Greetings

Getting a popular high PageRank site in your subject area to link to you can be difficult. There are probably plenty of them out there, but why would they link to you? Today we’re going to cover a very easy yet potentially powerful way to build strong links with little work. Actually the beauty of this tip is any time you don’t have something to write about, you can use it. It is guaranteed to give you something to say with out wracking your brain. You might even get a nice strong backlink for your web site. Since backlinks are critical for people finding your site naturally as well as in search engines it’s a double win.

Now this tip is for web sites that have a blog. If your web site doesn’t have a blog then you’re missing out. Blogs are a great way to inform your clients and attract new visitors. They are pretty easy to setup, and you don’t even need to have the blog hosted on your site (though it’s better if it is). You can sign up for a free blog from numerous web sites, but Wordpress is probably the most popular. If you have a blog on your web site you should post something regularly. The absolute bare minimum is once a month. If people don’t hear from you for a month they’re more likely to unsubscribe. For best results update your blog weekly or more. Some people update multiple times a day, but usually those people are blogging professionally.

OK, now that we have the blog part covered you’re probably wondering how to get all of these big powerful links. Well the secret is really simple, has no guarantees, but the time invested is small and the potential gain is worth it. When you’re short on things to say, start searching for a newer blog in your subject range. One that’s fairly new but getting updated regularly (at least a few times per week) is best. You can find these blogs from Google Blog Search or Technorati. If you use google make sure to choose the advanced search and select blogs from the last 12 hours or last day to see newer blogs. If you use Technorati the default is blogs with some authority, but to see newer blogs you’ll have to change your filter to show any blog as in the screenshot below.

You might be wondering why we’re going to new and unpopular blogs for powerful links. Well here’s the reasoning behind it. When you find a new blogger that has something interesting to say, write about that new blogger and what they had to say. Most blogs have this thing called a trackback. When you write about someone it puts a link in their blog to your blog. Now when you write about an experienced blogger who gets many trackbacks a day the blogger is likely to take little notice. Newer bloggers though are more likely to take a look at your site, comment on your post, and more. The nice thing is, if the blogger ever becomes popular your trackback to an early article could work out to be a good link. Even better the newer blogger may write about and link to one of your posts, creating potential for a strong future link.

The beauty of this is it’s easy to do. It only takes a bit of time to read through a few different blogs to find something interesting. You don’t really need to write a book about what they said either. Maybe just say that it was something interesting that you found and felt like sharing. Simple things like this can make a blog go from one interesting post per week to two or three. And blogs that give readers something to think about a bit more often get more attention. I’ll provide you with an example.

I found a nice blog similar to my own about web design. The author Terry Dunn writes about a lot of similar subjects, so it’s definitely a worthwhile read for my visitors. His post today about the difference between white hat and black hat seo was pretty informative. If you’re not too familiar with what the difference is between the two check it out. Even if you do know, he has plenty of other interesting posts.

Well that’s it for me today. I have to get back to writing the SEO Guide to have it ready for the newsletter subscribers this weekend. As always the easiest way to build links and get your site noticed it to contact us and save yourself the hassle. Until tomorrow, Pura Vida!

Good point Paul. I find that networking with newer bloggers really pays off as one feeds off the other and eventually you all succeed. A rising tide lifts all boats, n all that :-). And more importantly than the trackback, it starts a relationship that can be good for many more links down the line.

Very true! Trackbacks are nice, but you can't always guarantee that they'll go though. I think comments are often the first place that people look after the article anyway.
