SEO Tip: Getting Fresh Links

2008

Well 2008 is upon us and we are looking at a different world from what we saw in the beginning of 2007. Google made changes to it's visible rankings of pages who it considered to be selling advertising. Google says that selling links for SEO purposes is bad, and wants advertisers to tag links with a "nofollow" tag. This lowers the links value in the eyes of all search engines. So what does that mean for you? Buying links just got a lot trickier. The good news is I’ve compiled a few tips to help get some new links, and most of them are even free!

Blogs for links

While most blogs use "nofollow" in their comments, leaving comments on popular blogs doesn't hurt. You see the idea of a link is to get traffic. All links that can bring you traffic are good this way. Being early to comment on a new post on a popular blog, or saying something interesting or controversial is likely to get you a few visits. Maybe if you regularly visit a blog the owner would be willing to write a post about you. Either way visiting blogs on your subject and posting insightful comments is easy and free. An easy way to find new blogs on a subject is Technorati or you can always go to your favorite search engine and type a relevant keyword and "+blog".

Contact webmasters directly

Going to a web page on a relevant subject and contacting the webmaster directly for a link can also work. While brokered links are starting to get detected, these types of links are almost impossible to spot. If you can't find the webmaster contact e-mail you can always try Domaintools Whois to look it up.

Well written press releases

Press releases can be submitted to get a few links, but well written press releases might make newspapers around the world. this can bring amazing results, but writing a professional press release can be a daunting task. Luckily I have two great press release writing resources that make it easy to figure out how to write an effective press release. When you've completed your press release submit it to a few PR sites such as PRWeb and the free PRLog.

Article submission

While this remains a bit more controversial on it's effectiveness it's worth noting. Article submission is writing an article about a certain subject, then giving that subject away for others to use on their web sites. The deal is that you get a link from it. Whether or not the link is any good depends on if anyone picks up on it, but it can bring some traffic. For examples of these type of articles just type "article submission" in to your favorite search engine. Most of these top sites let you submit your article for free, so give it a try.
